BASKETBALL GAMES IN TAIWAN AND IN USA
台湾和美国的篮球比赛

我的第二个Vlog麻烦得不得了。 I had sort of forgot I was supposed to film a vlog over the practicum weekend and realized on the Monday we were heading back I needed to turn in a vlog the next day so when we were walking to the beach and I saw the track I just started filming. In some ways I like this nonchalant style of vlogs as they seem very casual and relaxed.  It feels like a casual conversation with a friend. I do worry however I am maybe supposed to be doing a more informative style of vlogging with more research and less of me just talking about this and that.

On the technical side, I am very happy with the subtitles and the quality of Chinese translations. I have found translating the vlogs to be very engaging because I am able to learn information outside of the textbook and am translating how I actually talk into Chinese. Working on the translations with Wu Laoshi was also very interesting because I am realizing more and more the subjectivity of translations. We spent quite a bit of time on each sentence discussing my intention and the various ways we could interpret that intention into a Chinese sentence. For example, when I talk about Steph Curry being a positive role model and my appreciation for the mastery of his craft, I intended to convey an appreciation for hard work and determination and the dividends a pursuit of mastery can yield, and we ended up with the Chinese sentences, “Curry给小孩子一个梦想: 虽然没有两百公分,要是他们多练习、有一个很好的心,也可以是很好打篮球员。”  Which more literally translates to Curry gives kids a dream that if they practice and have a good heart they do not need to be 200cm to be a good basketball player. I thought this was interesting, as if demonstrates the difficulties of translating between the two languages and some of liberties that much be taken to communicate the intention behind a sentence.

For my next vlog I want to improve on the actual content of the vlog. I honestly think my first and second vlog have been a little bit boring so I would like to explore something more informative or exciting. I think this weekend I must explore and find an exciting recreational activity and create a vlog around this. I was inspired the Liam and Phoebe would went and did Tai Chi with some senior citizens in Daan Park and would like to replicate their sense adventure and confidence to put themselves into an unfamiliar situation. I think I must push myself outside of my comfort zone and interact with 台湾人to improve my vlog. Hopefully I can find some friends to help improve my vlog.
