ABOUT ME

My name is Sabrina Dang. I am a 4th year Film Studies major at the University of British Columbia and this summer I took an intensive Chinese language course offered by our university in Taipei, Taiwan. Along with learning Chinese, I can also speak English, Vietnamese, and Japanese; as a result, I find languages to be extremely important to intercultural understanding and promoting diversity. My goal with my film career is to make films which encourage such diversity and understanding. During my time studying in Taiwan, besides studying Chinese, I also explored alternative cultures such as: street dance, underground music, and fashion. I made some vlogs about these topics, so please take a gander if you have time!

WHAT THIS PROGRAM BROUGHT ME

After doing this intensive course in Taiwan, I’ve noticed that not only has my Chinese improved overall, but I have also learned much about Taiwanese culture. Additionally, I’ve met many great people and made long-lasting memories. I would love to continue practicing my Chinese even after this program ends.

EXPLORING TAIWAN

Practicum Day

For our Practicum long weekend, I went with a group of friends and the five of us chose to go to Hualian because we heard it is one of Taiwan’s most beautiful places. And it truly did not disappoint - during that weekend, our group enjoyed the unique Dongdamen Night Market, tried Taiwanese aboriginal food, watched a beautiful sunset, explored the breathtaking and natural beauty of Taroko National Park, and also had time to treat ourselves to a massage! By going to Hualian, I was able to discover the unique cultures of Taiwan that exist outside of Taipei, and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the aboriginal culture in Hualian is strong and celebrated. This was also a true test of our Chinese skills, because we had to navigate our way around and communicate in Chinese, without our teachers to help us!
